ABPI Congress Guidelines Unpacked

The ABPI released new guidance around conferences, we’ve unpacked the guidance to help you stay on track.

So, here’s a quick checklist to help keep everything compliant and stress-free when you're putting together your next symposium or exhibition stand for a conference.

Promotional vs Non-Promotional?

Make sure there's a clear line between them. If it's medical/scientific content, it can't be mixed with your brand promotion. Keep materials, staff, and booths physically and visually separate.

Get Certified Early

All materials whether printed, digital, or spoken need to be signed off before the event. Don’t leave it to the last minute!

Venue & Hospitality

Is it modest, appropriate, and secondary to the agenda? Always. No entertainment or lavish perks; think scientific focus first.

Subsistence

We have a definitive list, only non-alcoholic beverages, such as tea, coffee and water, and very limited quantities of sweets, biscuits or fruit are allowed. You should still be careful because whatever you decide to offer should not be perceived as an inducement to visit your stand.

Satellite Symposia Rules

Keep your learning content front and centre. Providing refreshments is ok.

Booth Design

Is your stand clearly labelled with your company name and any sponsorships declared? Is access to prescription-only medicine (POM) information limited to HCPs only? You're on the right track. Pre-license content should not be seen by anyone.

Social Media

Planning some digital buzz? Great, but make sure your posts stay within professional circles. No promotion of POMs to

the public, even accidentally.

Outside of this checklist based on the new guidance there is a couple more things we’ve noticed that are worth

mentioning.

The ABPI have provided a list of who they consider to be members of the public which includes medical students,

pharmacy students. We know this always a sticky topic for some because students were sometimes allowed into

promotional meetings in a general practice or hospital setting, this makes it clear that they probably should not attend

any product related promotional meetings.

The ABPI explicitly state that you can’t put pipeline stuff on your medical stand. We think it rules out putting stuff on your stand panels but arguably extends to what you have on the table, so you in practice the industry might

have to cover up all pipeline stuff and then only reveal it in response to a direct ask from an HCP.

could help you and your teams stay on the right side of the code.
